Indian Soldiers - During the Wars

Image of unknown British Indian Army Regiment, photograph taken during the early 20th Century
British Indian Army Soldiers

Indian soldiers fought side by side with the British soldiers during the first and second world wars.

India paid one and a half million men to fight for Britain in the First World War (1914 – 1918). During the Second World War two million Indian men fought on the British side. India provided the muscle that sustained the British Empire: not so much a jewel, more like a giant engine of war. Thousands of Indian soldiers gave their lives during these conflicts. Sadly, they do not get the same recognition as their British counterparts for their bravery, courage and commitment.
