Nesting Dolls

Image of five Japanese / Chinese Nesting dolls
Traditional Japanese / Chinese Nesting Dolls

This is a set of five wooden nesting dolls or matryoshka.
The dolls are of decreasing sizes and can be placed one inside another. Although this type of doll is more popularly associated with Russia they actually first appeared in China and Japan in the 1700s.

I had one of these as child and loved it, although it was very precious. In Russia these dolls were traditionally made by grandparents to give to their grandchildren.

Thanks for the info! My grandparents had a set of these at there house and we LOVED to play with them. And some how in life I ended up with them and I still love them.
